May 8th, 2014 was a busy day across Virginia! Throughout the day, members of the Virginia Art Therapy Association teamed up in their communities to spread awareness about mental health and resiliency in children and adolescents!
As VATA shared valuable children’s mental health resources via social media and encouraged Facebook “friends” to use our CMHAD logo as their profile picture to show support for the cause, countless members shared the link to our downloadable resources with friends, colleagues, and family members via email.
VATA Members were also visible in their communities, promoting awareness and passing out printed versions of our flyers at MCV Children’s Hospital in Richmond, CHKD in Norfolk, and all over the campus of Eastern Virginia Medical School and Sentara/Norfolk General Hospital. Both first and second year EVMS Art Therapy and Counseling students gathered together to create striking sidewalk chalk murals around the campus. Students worked with children, parents, and hospital employees with the goal of engaging community members in conversations about mental health while using the chalk to create positive images, words, and phrases to capture the day’s theme of resiliency.
It’s not too late to access our bank of downloadable children’s mental health resources on our website. We’ll be sure to keep them up all year, so continue to spread the word!
Thanks for everyone’s participation and support of this very special day!
